His Excellency, The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has given his views on the proposed hate speech fine. According to him, there can’t be democracy without criticism, and Government cannot on its own define hate speech. The Federal Government has said that the fine for hate speech bill has been increased from N500,000 to N5m. This did not go well with the opposition and many human rights activist in Nigeria.
The outspoken and embattled Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has taken to his verified Twitter handle to say that the aim of the FG on hate speech bill is to gag opposing views. In his tweet, the governor said, we have the courts for anyone to seek redress against libel. Read his tweets below.
